Obituary for Garth McMillan

Garth McMillan
McMILLAN, Garth, peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Thornton View Long Term Care, Oshawa a few days shy of his 90th birthday. Beloved husband for 65 years of the late Joyce McMillan (nee Sandrock); cherished mother of Brian (Marcia), Sandi (Terry), and Leigh Smith who passed away on October 17, 2014, (Barry Smith). Proud grandma of Jenn McMillan, Mike McMillan (Katie McMillan), Christine Pearson (Andrew Pearson), Stacey Horning, Alex Smith (Deanna Smith), and Jessica Smith. Proud great grandpa "GG" of Mattigan Amber Leigh Johnston and Jillian Joycy Smith. Dear brother in law of Sandy Sandrock (Maureen). Uncle of Todd Sandrock (Sharla), Tara Laderoute, Sean Sandrock, and their families. By profession, and in everything he did, Garth was a teacher. After a successful teaching career, he continued to provide advice, guidance, and edits in red pen with longhand notes (typed up by Joyce) to many students pursuing higher education. Family weren’t left out from advice/corrections to grammar and diction. Garth was also a lifelong student; family benefitted as taste testers through his time training as a chef. “Where did you go to school?” was a favourite conversation starter. Garth and Joyce travelled extensively exploring and discovering things together. Garth lived his faith every day; he returned to school and earned his Master of Divinity at U of T and was ordained. Garth was proud to attend the graduation ceremonies of his children and grandchildren and they too were proud to attend his graduation. Garth was active in ministry at Gentle Shepherd, and then with Faith Place, and in Florida over the many years Garth and Joyce wintered there and built lasting friendships. Joyce and Garth's love and friendship created a large, closely connected family that celebrates and enjoys time together often. Our deepest and heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Thornton View especially PSW Rae. Christine from Jackson Therapeutics had a very close bond with Garth and kept him singing. Your kindness is appreciated by family more than you will ever know. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, Oshawa would be greatly appreciated by Garth’s family. Family and friends are welcome to visit on Monday, July 30th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East, Oshawa. A Memorial Celebration of Garth's Life will be held in the chapel at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 31st, at 11:00 a.m. To share an online condolence please visit www.armstrongfh.ca
