Obituary for Douglas Gordon Langmaid (Langmaid)

Douglas Gordon Langmaid (Langmaid)
With sadness the family of Douglas Langmaid announces his passing on June 4, 2017.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Tonkin. Doug was an amazing Dad to his children Carole (Terry) Keys, Chris (Sandra) Langmaid and Sandi (Rick) Vincent. He was the proud Grandpa of Shannon Keys (Gareth Simons) of England, Lyndsay (LCDR Chris) Bolton of Colorado, USA; Lauren Keys of Japan; Aimee Langmaid California, USA; and Sarah (Dan) Glickman of ON; and Great Grandpa of Evie Bolton and Annabel Glickman. Eldest son of the late Wesley and Carrie Louise Langmaid, and brother of Jack (Ruth) Langmaid of Oshawa and Ross (Lynn) Langmaid of Kelowna, BC.
Doug was class president of University of Toronto Dental College in the early 1940s. He was a member of Army (Veteran’s) Dental Corps. He maintained contact with a number of his U of T classmates, enjoying fishing in Algonquin Park until several years ago. Doug practiced dentistry in Oshawa for over forty years. He was on staff at Oshawa General Hospital for many years.
In the 1950s and 60s, many professionals took Wednesday afternoons off and worked Saturday mornings. Many Wednesdays, Doug would take his children to the local train station to watch the steam engines get filled with water or take them sledding at Hills and Dales or skiing. It was a ‘special’ time with his young family. Many weekends were spent skiing or at the cottage with the family. Later, many weekends were spent on the golf course.
He enjoyed sports through the years: rugby, swimming, skiing, golf, bocce and curling. He was an avid reader who also enjoyed bridge, gin rummy, bid euchre, Uno and the occasional game of poker (cards).
Doug was the ultimate volunteer. He served as President of Oshawa Junior Chamber of Commerce, Oshawa Rotary Club, Oshawa Ski Club, Oshawa Golf and Country Club, Ontario County Flying Club, and in Florida he was president of Augusta Villa association for a number of years. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
The family thanks Dr David Ibsen for his weekly visits and care for Dad, Tasos Kapernekas of Oshawa Hearing Aid Clinic and the wonderfully caring staff of The Village of Taunton Mills and CCAC staff.
Memorial Donations may be mad to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre;www.hearthplace.org; 86 Colborne St W, Oshawa, ON L1G 1L7.
At Doug’s request, a private service will be held.
