Obituary for Marinus Vandermeer

Marinus Vandermeer
Marinus Johannes Vandermeer
Aug. 23, 1948 – May 19, 2018
Langeraar, Netherlands Whitby, Ontario
Marinus and his wife, Cathy (Dalby) were highschool sweethearts, meeting in September 1967 at Oshawa Catholic High School, and were married on July 23, 1971. Marinus loved spending time with his family, from raising his children Aaron (Wioletta) and Joelle (Bruno) with his wife Cathy to being Papa to his grandchildren Christian, Leam, Peyton, Julia, and Simon. Papa always made the BEST breakfasts.
He was the first-born and much loved son of John (deceased) and Helen and much loved brother of Mary (Earl), John (Alice-Faye), Gary - deceased (Sue), Carl (Joy – deceased), Greg (Tammy), Jane, and Rick (Karen). He was dearly loved by Cathy’s parents, Jack (deceased) and Marion, and her siblings Tom (Sue), Dan (Kathy), Susan, Barbara - deceased (Garry (Joni)), Teresa, Jim (Kim), and Carolyn (Devon). He will also be missed by his many, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
What a GREAT guy!!!!!...everyone who knew him would say….family, friends, neighbours, co-workers at GE, Honeywell, GM, and EDS, sports associates from OCHL, NASC, OBHA, and OBTA, schoolmates from St. Gregory’s Catholic School, Oshawa Catholic High School and Durham College (part of the 1st graduating class).
Marinus passed away after battling dementia. Thank you so much to his caregivers at Ontario Shores – not enough thanks can be given for the work you do. Thank you to those who have supported us with your prayers, visits, coffee or a shoulder to lean on.
We will miss “Dutch” very much but as his grandson Simon told us, “When people die, it’s because God needs them.” Marinus will be one of God’s best angels.
Funeral service is to be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 373 Simcoe Street South, Oshawa on Saturday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to immediately follow at Oshawa Portuguese Club, 520 Simcoe Street South, Oshawa. If desired, donations in memory of Marinus may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Jump-Start. On line condolences can be made at www.armstrongfh.ca.
